Motorists traveling toward the West Valley from downtown Phoenix this weekend should allow extra travel time and plan ahead to avoid a closure of westbound Interstate 10 (Papago Freeway) between 51st and 67th avenues due to construction of the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway.
Westbound I-10 will be closed from 10:00 p.m. Friday, June 28, to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, June 30, in west Phoenix. The westbound I-10 on-ramps at 27th, 35th and 43rd avenues also will be closed to help reduce traffic backups.
Work will include replacing signs near the interchange of the South Mountain Freeway and I-10, installing a concrete barrier, adding a loop detection system as well as landscaping and irrigation.
To avoid delays on westbound I-10, motorists should consider alternate routes, including the Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) west of Interstate 17, or exiting I-10 sooner and taking local streets to re-enter past the closure point.
Westbound I-10 traffic can exit at 43rd Avenue and detour either to the westbound I-10 access road or McDowell Road or Van Buren Street before re-entering the freeway at 67th Avenue. Drivers should expect heavy delays.
