The Texas Department of Transportation reports that work is set to begin on a project to reconstruct the eastbound and westbound bridges on I-10 at RM 1111 in Sierra Blanca.

The improvement project will result in a three-mile detour for residents travelling from one side of town to the other, but is not expected to impact drivers on I-10. Residents were first informed of the project last year.

This week, crews will start phase 1 of the bridge replacement project. On Monday, some main lanes will be closed as crews work to get traffic re-routed through the cross-overs. By the end of the week, I-10 traffic will be down to one lane, both, eastbound and westbound.

While the project is expected to cause minimal impact on interstate travelers, local residents will see more of an impact. Expect a fairly long detour to get from the North side of the Interstate to the South and the same on RM 1111. Local drivers are encouraged to follow the marked detour route.

Construction on the project is expected to last nine months. The residential detour is expected to last the duration of the project.
