Several barges broke loose from their moorings on the San Jacinto River east of Houston on Friday night and drifted below the Interstate 10 bridges, where they impacted bridge supports.

Two barges pinned beneath the bridge were removed Sunday and a third remains grounded on the San Jacinto Waste Pits Superfund Site.

Consequently, Interstate 10 at the San Jacinto River closed over the weekend and into today, as officials determine the extent of damages to the columns supporting the bridges.

The Texas Department of Transportation is currently conduct structural inspections before opening up any I-10 lanes to traffic.

Right now, the Texas Department of Transportation is directing I-10 travelers around the closing. Motorists can use either the Sam Houston Tollway, U.S. 90 and FM 2100 to get across the river to the north, or else Texas 330, Texas 146 and Texas 225 to bypass to the south.
