As part of a development that includes a Buc-ee’s Travel Center, construction began July 5 on the Menge Avenue interchange on I-10. To prepare the roadway for an expected increase in traffic, the interchange project will involve replacing the Menge Avenue bridge over I-10, widening entrance and exit ramps and widening Firetower Road. This project is funded by the Harrison County Board of Supervisors and Buc-ee’s and is anticipated to be completed in approximately 18 months.

While construction is underway, the Menge Avenue overpass will close to traffic starting the week of July 12 and is anticipated to remain closed for approximately 13 months. This closure will allow the original bridge to be removed and replaced. Exit and entrance ramps at the location will remain open. Detour signage will be in place, and motorists should seek alternate routes.

“Thanks to local visionaries and private investment, the Menge Avenue interchange will soon undergo a major expansion, attracting more motorists and driving economic growth,” said Commissioner Tom King, Southern Transportation District. “We’re proud to work with our partners on this project to ensure the design and construction of this interchange meets state and federal standards that keep the traveling public safe.”

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has approved the interchange plan and issued a permit for construction.

“The Menge Avenue interchange with Buc-ee’s Travel Center makes Harrison County a destination for travelers and businesses alike,” said Marlin Ladner, Harrison County Supervisor. “We expect this project to fuel economic growth in the region, and this construction is an exciting step forward in this highly anticipated development.”

Neel Shaffer and Michael Baker International will serve as Construction Engineering and Inspection consultants to ensure the project meets MDOT standards and specifications for roadway and bridge construction. The contractor for the project is T.L. Wallace of Columbia.
