Almost 43 million Americans will begin summer with a Memorial Day weekend roadtrip. The unofficial start to summer travel has always been Memorial Day weekend, and according to the American Automobile Association, this year will see the second-highest travel volume on record. Overall, an additional 1.5 million more people will travel compared with last year, a 3.6% increase.

Even though gas prices continue to rise nationally, the vast majority of Memorial weekend travelers will take to the highways to get to their destinations. INRIX, a global transportation analytics company, expects heavy traffic, and frequent delays on most of the countryā€™s major highways and commutes could be more than three times longer than normal.

For the nearly 38 million Americans traveling by auto, INRIX, in collaboration with AAA, predicts drivers will experience the greatest amount of congestion on Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24 in the late afternoon as commuters leave work early and mix with holiday travelers. Major cities could experience travel delays up to three times as long as on a non-holiday weekend.

To help make your holiday trip a little less stressful, many individual state Departments of Transportation we be suspending critical highway construction activities during Memorial Day weekend.
